Botox® is a trade name for Botulinum Toxin, a naturally purified protein that can be quickly and relatively painlessly injected into muscles, blocking the neurotransmission of the nerves to the muscles, and thereby temporarily relaxing the area. This can help relieve the visible tension and pain associated with TMJ, Bruxism and migraines, as well as minimize the appearance of wrinkles, including frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet.
What is Botox®?
Please note that cosmetic Botox® treatments are only available for existing patients.
Cosmetic and Therapeutic Botox® Treatment
Oftentimes Botox® is injected into particular points on the face to block nerve signals to various muscles. In doing so, movement is limited, which reduces the look of lines and wrinkles, and creates a smoother overall appearance. It is often injected on the forehead, between and around the eyes (crow’s feet) creating a smoother overall appearance. Dentists can also use Botox® for therapeutic purposes, in conjunction with other dental treatments, for things like complications associated with tight jaw muscles like TMJ pain, grinding and clenching (bruxism), treatment of chronic headaches and migraines, and prevention of teeth damage due to daytime teeth grinding. Dentists are highly qualified to administer Botox®, since they are trained in facial structure and facial anatomy, have exceptional knowledge and experience with the head and neck anatomy, are competent and comfortable using needles, and know more than anyone what makes a great smile. Typical Botox® injections will last for 3-5 months, leaving wrinkles and other lines less visible afterwards.
