Do You Need Braces For Your Overbite?

Overbite correction is the second most common reason people are choosing to get braces today, according to Dentaly. It’s worth consulting with a dentist to see what treatment is best for you.

Do you need braces for your overbite?

Braces are often an appropriate treatment, but not always. (Read more on other myths about braces here.)

What is an Overbite?

An overbite is a condition where the teeth on the top jaw vertically overlap the teeth on the bottom. Horizontal overlap is usually called ‘overjet’.

This helpful video explains the difference between overbite and overjet.

An overbite can be skeletal or dental. As the name suggests, a skeletal overbite occurs when the jawbone develops irregularly. Dental overbites are caused by teething issues, like overcrowding.

Causes of Overbite

Overbites are common. They’re usually the result of hereditary or genetic factors, but they can also be impacted by early childhood habits.

Some common causes of overbite are:

  • Genetics
  • Improper jaw formation

The braces will be stuck to your teeth and will manipulate them over time.

How Long Does it Take to Fix an Overbite With Braces?

Every case is different, so it’s not possible for us to tell you how long it’ll take for your overbite to be fixed with braces.

We can tell you that a deep overbite is one of the orthodontic conditions that takes the longest to correct with braces. In some cases, you’ll need braces for at least two years.

Check in with your dentist at Canyon Dental for information tailored to you and your overbite.

Can You Get Braces For an Overbite as an Adult?

It’s generally easier to treat overbite in children. This is because a child’s jaw is still developing. Therefore, it’s more receptive to changes.

That being said, braces can be used to move the teeth to correct an overbite in some adults. And, now that we’re all aware of the health benefits of a straight smile, more adults are getting braces than ever before.

If braces aren’t the right treatment for you, your dentist might also look at teeth removal or surgery to correct your overbite. These treatments are only recommended in more severe cases.

What Happens if You Don’t Treat Your Overbite?

There are a number of common complications associated with untreated overbites.

Common complications include:

  • Poor esthetics
  • Low self-esteem
  • Trauma to the gums
  • Abnormal wear in the tooth enamel
  • Discomfort
