Whether you’re self-isolating after a vacation, feeling sick, or just staying home to prevent your chance of getting ill, your oral health is especially important to maintain. Even small issues like getting food stuck in braces can cause issues later unless you take care of your teeth and mouth.
April is Oral Health Month as well, so there’s really no better time to start taking your oral health seriously. By practicing good oral hygiene and care you ensure you can enjoy drinking and eating pain-free.

Brushing and Toothbrushes
Plan your mornings out and don’t rush your brushing. You should brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day to ensure your mouth stays clean. Don’t brush too hard, hold your toothbrush at a slight angle to also get your gums, and brush both the outside and inside of your teeth to maximize your oral hygiene.
If you have braces, it’s especially important to keep them clean. Food stuck in braces can provide more opportunities for bacteria to grow. Be thorough in your brushing so it doesn’t become a problem.
If you do happen to contract the coronavirus, keep your toothbrush away from any others. The virus spreads by its presence in saliva so keep yours away from everyone else’s to make sure it doesn’t spread. After recovering from the virus, throw out your old one and replace it so no one else contracts it.
Other Important Oral Care Routines
Just as brushing is important, so are these other oral care practices as well. Flossing once a day is important to keep your gums healthy and avoid bacteria buildup in between your teeth. Like brushing, it’s important not to rush as you could damage your gums. As you reach your gumline, curve the floss around your tooth into a “C” shape to get the harder to reach spots.
Don’t forget to clean your tongue using your toothbrush or tongue cleaner. Not only can this get rid of bacteria it benefits your taste buds too. By cleaning your tongue you get rid of dead cells and food debris improving your breath and ability to taste better!
Oral Care Lifestyle Choices
If you’re spending a lot of time at home you might already have Netflix going and are just about to grab some snacks, but hold on! It’s easy to fall into the habit of grabbing some junk food and chilling on the couch, but you’re not doing your body (or mouth) any favours that way.
Here are some important lifestyle habits to maintain your oral health:
- Limit or avoid consuming sugary, acidic drinks entirely. This includes soft drinks, fruit juice, and energy drinks, but it also includes sugar in coffee and tea (we know, that last part might be especially hard for some people).
- Although Vitamin C has been known to boost your immune system, watch your consumption of it. Chewed or dissolved it can damage the enamel of your teeth. If you need it, buying it in a capsule or tablet form can be a better choice for your oral health.
- Although these are stressful times for many people, it’s important to not smoke or quit smoking. Not only does smoking have a whole series of negative health benefits, but it can also be especially damaging to your oral and lung health.
- If you need a drink, choose water. Decongestants can sometimes lead to a dry mouth, so rehydrating with water is important. If you need to replenish your electrolytes, drink sports drinks in moderation and choose ones that are sugar-free.
Rarely leaving the house during these times can be hard. Be sure to connect with friends and family whenever possible to get your social needs in too.
